Donte Harden, Ohio University running back |
By: Kyle Caja
Donte ‘Hi Def’ Harden is running his way to his dream. Donte, the senior Ohio University running back has dreams of the National Football League. Though he has many off-the-field hobbies, he can be found consistently either in the weight room or in the film room; constantly trying to better his game.
Off the field, Harden is just as busy. While being a senior, planning to graduate on time, he is majoring in Health Service Administration. In between school and football, Donte still finds time to keep up with his hobbies. These included basketball, fishing, paintballing, video games, and walking his dog. Something that many people may not know about young Donte Harden, he is a proud father of one.

Coming into this year, Harden had accumulated 1267 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns. So far this year, he has 306 yards and only 1 touchdown in just five games. He suffered a groin injury against Marshall and missed the following tow games. Harden is still optimistic about this season saying that the goals coming into the season were “to be a 1,000 yard rusher” and “to go and win a bowl game.”

Harden is very goal oriented, working for his future, and planning his next steps. “It would be a blessing to be drafted. Not too many people do. My goal is to go to the NFL, but I’m not going to limit myself. I’m trying to keep all of my options open right now.” Harden said. Even after missing two games this year, Harden is still optimistic that he can put up the numbers to get drafted by either an NFL or even a Canadian Football League team.
In college, football players don’t often change their number. In the off-season coming into this year, Harden made a change. He changed his number from 28, to 8. “I ‘shook off’ the two” he said, laughing. “I wanted it to be one of my goals; to get so much better that people would say I shook off the two.” This is just another goal from the Harden, the young running back out of Erie, Pennsylvania.

I was curious on why a resident of Erie, Pennsylvania would venture so far away from home. “I had a chance to compete to be a 4-year starter.” Harden said. “My whole goal is to get to the NFL. If I can compete for a starting position for all four years, then it will help me achieve my goal.” I’m sure Ohio University is glad that they could have the talent like Donte on the team.
Donte, with signs a few of his fans made for him. |
Donte’s nickname is not like others you normally see. ‘Hi Def’, even spelled an odd way, is unique to his abilities. When some of his high school friends starting calling him it, it just seemed to stick all the way to college. He told me how his grandfather, who had poor vision, would say that watching Donte play was like watching television in high definition. If you have ever seen Donte run, I’m sure you would agree with his grandfather. With his breakneck speed and great agility, the only good way to watch him is in high definition.
