“My future aspiration is to be happy,” she asserts. Simple yet profound.
She describes herself in somewhat different terms. When asked for five words to describe herself, she replied with, “Awkward, sarcastic, loyal, funny...and let’s go with intelligent.” Given that her current course load includes philosophy courses and Russian, intelligent should go without saying. But of course, her classes are not the best thing about college.
“The best things about college so far are the friends I’ve made and the people I’ve met,” Tessa says. Why did she pick OU specifically? “It was the farthest away from home I could get while staying in the state.”
Tessa hails from Holgate, Ohio, a small town near Toledo. Her father, Don, is a farmer who got the nickname Butch because of a bad haircut when he was little.

“When I was little, I used to think he could be black because he’s a farmer and he gets really dark in summer,” Tessa laughs. She describes her mom, Deb, as a “fun lady.” Her sister, Alaina, is a journalist in the nation’s capital.

In her free time, Tessa likes to think about life’s mysteries, read, write, and listen to music, in which she has wide tastes, including R.E.M., the Beatles and Vampire Weekend. Her favorite book is The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. When asked for a favorite movie, she protests that there are too many.
“If I had to choose one, though, I would choose I Am Sam,” she answers finally. “Every time I find that it’s on TV I have to watch it.” Other hobbies include playing intramural broomball, though she claims, “I don’t really play sports because I’m horrible at them.” However, she enjoys watching football, as well. The popular fall sport is only a small part of why fall is her favorite season. “The smell of leaves, the temperature, everything is perfect.”
To those who know her, Tessa seems pretty laid back and fun-loving. Still, there are things that can annoy her.
“The worst is when people go to tell you something and they pause in the middle of their sentence while you’re hanging by their every word,” she says. “For example, my mother will say, ‘Did you hear about the...’ and pause for like a minute while I’m thinking ‘What?! What have I may or may not heard about?!’”
In fact, one of Tessa’s life goals is “to find someone that can stand being in my presence for more than a day without getting annoyed or annoying.” Another life goal is to beat Brickbreaker on her Blackberry. “It’s so hard!” she exclaims.
